I just finished watching a documentary about the development of Pixar, The Pixar Story, and felt inspired to draw a more finished piece, since I’ve been mostly working on quick, rough studies. I’ve been meaning to draw this lamp for two years now, and this seemed like a perfect subject since Pixar’s first iconic character, Luxo, was a desk lamp. If you have the ability to stream movies from Netflix you should watch The Pixar Story!

What you see below are some small pen & ink and gouache thumbnails I’ve been working on for a new series of paintings entitled Moulting: The Anthropomorphism of Everyday Life. Belated Mother’s Day Drawing

When I was going to school in Pasadena, CA I visited the Norton Simon museum 2-3 times a week. It was a great museum, it was small and eclectic. During the time I spent there I developed a love for a small Botticelli painting they had, Madonna and Child with Adoring Angel. The reason I love this piece is that it is one of few Mary and Jesus paintings that focuses on the simple and strong mother-son bond. I feel most paintings that show Mary and baby Jesus focus more on Mary’s viriginity and Christ’s divinity, and lose the more human relationship this mother and son share. It’s a beautiful piece. In light of my feelings about this piece I drew a copy of it for my mother for Mother’s Day.

Finally, here it is. This is my most recently finished painting. It’s an oil on canvas, 48 x 36 inches. With most of my paintings I will make small to moderate changes to the composition based on the reference I have for the painting. This time around I made more significant changes. I am starting to make more of a serious move to work more from my observational and imaginative drawings. I don’t think I’ll totally move away from using photo reference, but I really love the challenge of using several different types of reference material to harmonize within one painting. The next 5 or 6 paintings I have planned are going to head more in this direction.

Some of the sketches are from the zoo, some are mastercopies (Alphonse Mucha, Agnolo Bronzino, Euan Uglow), some from various photos, and the drawings of my dogs and girlfriend were drawn from life. Currently I have some of my work hanging at the Optic Nerve Tattoo Shop and Gallery (1223 NE Alberta Street). This particular group of pieces is a little different from what I usually exhibit since most of them are smaller works in gouache and pencil. So if you have time stop by and see the show. It will be up until March 27th.
